Attunement is a form of energy work originally developed by Lloyd Arthur Meeker (1907 – 1954) and his colleagues. Meeker taught and practiced Attunement as a central feature of his spiritual teaching and ministry, Emissaries of Divine Light. Attunement is taught as a personal spiritual practice and as a healing modality offered through the hands.
Attunement acknowledges that each of us is a combination of Human, physical substance drawn from the earth, and Being, an invisible, animating life force. Inherent in Being is a wellspring of energy and specific purpose, yet the connection with our Beingness has been clouded by various experiences, including stress, conflict and disease. Attunement practitioners believe that positive shifts in consciousness release a healing energy through a person’s body, mind and emotions.
At the core of the technique is the establishment of an energetic circuit between the practitioner and the client. Practitioners seek to establish that circuit by sharing life energy through their, hands held over areas of the client’s body.
Meeker taught that the first step in the Attunement process was the alignment of the cervical vertebrae by the radiation of healing energy through the practitioner’s hands, held on either side of the neck of the client. Contemporary Attunement practitioners continue to offer attunement that begins and ends with an Attunement of the cervical vertebrae. Often, the cervical Attunement is followed by Attunement of the endocrine glands and chakras or some of the major organs of the body.
An attunement session lasts from 20 minutes to one hour, with the recipient either seated or lying down. Most people report feeling relaxed, at peace, at ease – a sense of being more in touch with themselves than is usual. A range of perceptions and sensations may be experienced, such as deep relaxation, seeing colors, feeling heat/cold, tingling. As Attunement works on subtle energy levels, its effects may be felt in the hours and days following a session.
As a spiritual practice, Attunement is intended to connect a person more closely to their spiritual source and to open the flow of life current. The practice includes conscious attention to the quality of spirit expressing through the practitioner in the daily living of life, and specific periods of meditation in the beginning and ending of each day.
